Former SENSE General Director Herman Verhoef and his colleague Peter Morin are the editors of a new book on Community Ecology. The book is entitled 'Community Ecology - Processes, Models and Applications', and contains contributions of more than 20 ecologists. It is the result of the SENSE PhD course on this subject which took place in 2005!
The book is published by the Oxford University Press and can be ordered via this link: ukcatalogue.oup.com/product/9780199228980.do.

Date: January 18, 2010
Location: room M655 of the W&N building, VU University, Amsterdam
Duration:
all day.
You are invited for a mini-symposium on effects of mixtures of toxicants in our environment.
Effects of mixtures receive more and more attention and it is now speculated that mixtures effects will be taken up in future legislation, instead of the current practice of evaluating every compound separately.
This symposium will precede the PhD graduation of Jan Baas.
To provide an overview of the current scientific and regulatory status on effects of mixtures we invited some renowned national and international speakers on the subject.
Date: January 27, 2010
Location: IVM, Vrije Universiteit, Amsterdam
Duration:
10:00 PM to 4:00 AM
In this symposium, we would like to explore the role of social science methods in designing, facilitating and evaluating participatory processes. Questions that will be covered are: Why are social science methods important for participatory processes? What kind of social science methods are relevant in this regard? What does this mean for the role of the social scientist? What kind of empirical applications are there, and what can we learn from them?
This symposium will precede the PhD graduation of Eefje Cuppen.
To register, please send an email with subject "symposium participation" to: e.h.w.j.cuppen@tudelft.nl
The full programme is available for download HERE.
Date: February 2, 2010
Location: Leeuwenborch building, Hollandseweg 1, Wageningen
Duration:
3:30 PM to 9:30 PM
KLV - Studiekring Milieu and Natuurwetenschappelijk Gezelschap Wageningen organize a mini-symposium honouring Marten Scheffer, professor of Aquatic Ecology and Water Quality Management at Wageningen University, as Spinoza Prize winner. Marten Scheffer received the Spinoza Prize for his pioneering research into the emergence of abrupt transitions in complex systems such as nature, climate and even society.
Date: February 9, 2010
Location: Conference center "De Werelt", Lunteren
Duration:
all day.
The Netherlands Annual Ecology Meeting is a two-day event organised by NERN and NECOV (Dutch - Flemish Ecological Society) and supported by The Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO). The set-up of the 2010 meeting is in accordance with previous years, which were a great success with over 300 participants.
Each day starts with a plenary session in which a Dutch and an international world leader present their view on a specific topic in ecology. Accordingly, parallel sessions will be held covering the wide field of ecology. The session topics listed this year have been selected by an organising committee (Jacintha Ellers (VU), Rampal Ettienne (RUG), Lourens Poorter (WU), Martijn Egas (UVA), Wolf Mooij (NIOO), Nicole van Dam (NIOO/RU, Chair) and Jaap van der Meer (NIOZ)), who also approached the conveners of the sessions. Besides oral presentations, time will be reserved for poster sessions and discussion.
Date: February 11, 2010
Location: Mediapark, Hilversum
Duration:
all day.
Date: February 11, 2010
Location: Atlas building, Wageningen University
Duration:
all day.
On the occasion of the opening of the Kraijenhoff van de Leur Laboratory for Water and Sediment Dynamics, a symposium is organized on the role of laboratory experiment in water and sediment dynamics research.
You are invited to consider, share and discuss different views on the topic with scientific experts in experimental research. Additionally, you are welcome to visit our campus and the new laboratory in a guided tour. This day includes lunch and drinks after the symposium and is free of charge.
Date: September 29, 2010
Location: Rotterdam, The Netherlands
Duration:
all day.
The Dutch research programmes Climate changes Spatial Planning and Knowledge for Climate, the City of Rotterdam and the Co-operative Programme on Water and Climate invite you to share your experience and knowledge with other scientists, politicians, policymakers and practitioners by participating in the international conference 'Deltas in Times of Climate Change'.

The Coastal Processes Research Group at the University of Ferrara is undergoing a rapid growth in the research field of the links between socio-economics and the impact of extreme storms and is therefore looking for a research assistant/fellow to expand their group.
Environmental ChemOinformatic (ECO) Marie Curie Initial Training Network (ITN) is a collaborative action of 7 institutions (Helmholtz Zentrum Muenchen, University of Applied Sciences Fresenius, Radboud Universiteit Nijmegen, Leiden University, Instituto Nacional de Investigación y Tecnología Agraria y Alimentaria, University of Kalmar and University of Milano-Bicocca) from 5 EU countries (Germany, The Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, Italy). The primary objective of this ITN is to contribute to the education of environmental chemoinformaticians who will receive an advanced training in both environmental sciences and computational in silico methods. The fellows of the network are expected to apply their knowledge for the implementation of the REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals) in particular with respect to the replacement, refinement and reduction of animal tests by alternative (in silico and in vitro) methods.
ECO provides 11 positions, Long-Term Fellowships, (Early Stage Researchers in EU terminology) leading towards PhD and 1 postdoctoral position (Experienced Researcher in EU terminology, 1 year duration) starting May 2010.
